> Based on the lyrics and the fact that Karelia is both a beer and a region partially annexed by the Soviet Union, one can imagine this to be a metaphor. The refrain can be translated as “bring me back my Karelia”, which the main character’s younger self means in the literal sense. As an old man, his refrain becomes a desperate request for the beer, since the land of the same name has long been stolen and never coming back. I’m assuming the girl is Mother Russia, who basically gets what she wants.
