Members of Haken, Dream Theater, Protest the Hero, Cradle of Filth and Inhuman Condition have ventured south of Lapland for this festive version of a Slayer classic.
“Seasons Greetings In The Abyss” combines the music of Slayer with sleigh bell celebration, with alternate lyrics penned by artist and illustrator Dan Goldsworthy (Accept, Alestorm and Sylosis) and Charlie Griffiths of Haken, who also both take on guitar duties.

Vocals are delivered by Canadian croon-maestro Rody ‘angel of breath’ Walker of Protest the Hero and tuba (yes tuba!) is supplied by Haken drummer Ray ‘nin blood’ Hearne. Cradle of Filth’s Dani-el ‘awaits’ Firth and Inhuman Condition drummer Jeramie ‘klerry’ Kling fill out the core-ensemble and special guest Jordan ‘captor of synth’ Rudess shows no mercy with a face mashing keyboard solo.

Griffiths had this to say about the collaboration: “Injecting this song with some Christmas cheer worked better than any of us expected! Apparently Jeff Hanneman loved Christmas, so hopefully he would approve of our tribute and I hope we help to spread some musical merriment during yet another Christmas of uncertainty in the pandemic abyss. Thanks to all the guys for joining in with the fun and to Scott Atkins for mixing!

Produced by Andy Sneap (Judas Priest, Exodus, Accept) at Backstage Recording Studios in Derbyshire with Byford and Sneap mixing and mastering, Carpe Diem strikes the ear as one of the most essential British metal statements of the last few years and not lacking in pace or bite, an album which will ignite the joy in stalwart supporters and attract a whole new legion to the Saxon fold.

Sneap, himself a guitarist and producer of some metal repute, ensures that Carpe Diem does not lack one ounce of grit or sharpness. “Andy’s obviously a very good guitarist,” says Biff, “but he’s not a blues-based guitarist like our guys are, he’s more of a modern style player. And that means the boys (Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt) love working with him because, again, it’s all about the intensity. Andy’s always pushing the envelope, he doesn’t let them get away with anything. They have to play it for real, full speed. He gets great sound, and we want that Gibson/ Marshall ‘80s sound even if they’re not Gibsons and Marshalls. We try and retain that British metal guitar sound that we created for Saxon, and he’s definitely an ‘80s child.”

Despite a career which has spanned 44 years with over 15 million albums sold, including four top 10 UK albums, and having played to hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide, Saxon are revving up for one of their busiest eras yet. “We’re gonna be quite busy this year,” says Biff. “We’re doing a UK tour later this month, there are festivals which have been rescheduled from two years ago, we’re looking to go to America, we’re also going to tour Europe and like everyone really, we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that everything works out and we can do it all. We’re also recording the second Inspirations album, and as we do that, you never know, we might write a few songs for the next Saxon album…”

As you can see, Saxon remain committed to seizing every minute of every hour of every day. Carpe Diem indeed!

Formed in 1985, Oakland thrashers Vio-Lence helped define and refine what came to be known as the Bay Area sound, dropping three seminal albums before splitting in 1993. Leaving behind a heady legacy, they reformed briefly a couple of times in the intervening years before becoming a full-time going concern once more in 2019. After playing a string of successful shows, the quintet started to think about new music and in 2022 they deliver Let The World Burn, a five-song EP showcasing their first new material in 29 years, which delivers on the classic Vio-Lence sound. "That came very naturally," states founding guitarist Phil Demmel. "I hadn't written a lot of thrash in the past 17 years or so but being the main songwriter for the band over the years I wanted that sound, I wanted that mid-80s raw thing, but I also wanted to capture our signature notes and structures and stuff like that." Elaborates vocalist Sean Killian, "Each song has its own individual sound, they are all very thrash metal, there are grinding riffs, technical riffs, and plenty of speed. The lyrics are written freely with no restrictions and without compromise while the vocal patterns are typically unusual and delivered with a multitude of emotions."

The album was tracked in Trident Studios in Pacheco, California by Juan Urteaga (Machine Head, Exodus), mixed by Tue Madsen (Dark Tranquillity, Heaven Shall Burn) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Alice In Chains, Death Angel), and the sessions went smoothly, with Demmel tracking his solos at home. "It was nice to be able to play things fifty times. I wanted to play all the solos single pass, which is something that I hadn't done for a while, everything had been kinda punched in and chopped up, so it's not all fluid, and these ones might not be first pass but they're one pass. I want to be able to play them the way they're supposed to be played, and I'm really proud of them." With the EP dropping in March the band plan to tour as much as possible through the spring and summer, and are already writing its followup. "I'd like to do another EP rather than an album, and we're working on the songs for it already, and hopefully we'll get in to record by next fall," says Demmel. "We want to constantly be releasing music, and constantly doing shows. At this stage we're excited for everybody who's still excited for this band. To them I say thank you for still listening to and supporting us, we're excited to come play, so spread the Vio-Lence."
